Video: Gaza's first food truck rolls on

Two years ago, brothers Moath and Mahmoud al-Hasnat introduced Gaza to Karmoshty, the coastal enclave's first mobile food cart.

The cart shares its name with the brothers' signature fried-chicken dish.

“[It’s] a crunchy chicken breast,” said Moath al-Hasnat, now 26. “It’s like Kentucky chicken.”

The brothers began the business after efforts to find jobs elsewhere didn't pan out, amid high rates of unemployment in Gaza, a problem that has only intensified in the past year. In 2018, the enclave’s jobless rate was around 54%. Nearly three in four young Gazans remain unemployed.

“This does not mean I should sit around and hope for doors to open up on their own,” said Moath al-Hasnat. “I believe I am successful because I did not just sit around, cursing the situation in the country.”

The long-term goal is to create a chain of mobile restaurants, as well as a sit-down location.

But for the time being, customers in Gaza need to be on the lookout for Karmoshty by paying attention to its Facebook page.
