Congressional Correspondent Position Overview:

Al-Monitor, a trusted and award winning independent source of Middle East news and analysis, is seeking a Congressional Correspondent to work with its senior correspondents and news managers to write daily stories focusing on the Middle East as a member of the Congress press corps, and fill in on other beats such as Pentagon, State Department, and the White House as needed.

The ideal candidate must have a proven track record as a journalist and news writer with a commitment to accuracy and fairness, a strong work ethic, and  an active social media presence,  as well as headline writing skills and a keen sense of what makes compelling news. 

The ideal candidate should have a background in Middle East news and policy, understanding of the legislative process and reading of bills, an established network among members and staff of both parties, breaking news, sharp headlines and fast, accurate and compelling news writing. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with Al-Monitor's news managers and senior correspondents to produce as many as 2-4 stories daily (including quick news pieces and longer reporting) focusing on Middle East issues facing Congress.
  • Attend regular Congressional briefings and cover lawmakers at off-site events. Produce round-up event coverage for Al-Monitor events. 
  • Develop strong headlines that maximize the impact and reach of each article.
  • Work with the social media and video teams to maximize the multimedia aspects of each article and maximize audience reach.
  • Ensure each story has the most compelling embedded SEO to maximize discovery of content on search platforms.
  • Fulfill other news duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must be a skilled journalist, with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in writing stories.
  • Must have a relentless commitment to accuracy, precision, fairness and balance.
  • Must have a strong sense of what makes a compelling breaking news headline.
  • Must have a strong eye for the most compelling quotes and newsworthy sound bites within a news talk program.
